Halloween is just around the corner and, to be honest. I had been brainstorming and planning Juniper's costume back in July. I know you are probably thinking, "She has too much time on her hands." On the contrary, I just knew that I wanted to make my baby's first costume for Halloween. I grew up wearing handmade costumes and I always thought they were the best because they weren't prefabricated from a costume store and I liked knowing that I wouldn't be wearing the same costume as another kid.
I wanted to be able to make this costume, but I didn't want things to be too complicated. I thought about making her a fruit, so I chose a strawberry. One major reason for this is because I refer to strawberries as "strawbabies." I know it makes no sense whatsoever, but I just thought it would be cute for her to be a strawberry.
MATERIALS:
- red onesie (I bought a long-sleeve one because it might be cold at night)
- red tights
- daisy ribbon
- green felt (I chose two different shades of green)
- fabric scissors (these ones are my favorite and they are shiny)
- hot glue gun (not in picture, but very necessary if you plan on using the mini pom poms)
- sewing needles (if you wish to hand sew some items)
- green elastic ribbon
- yellow sewing thread (Initially, I thought white, but yellow gave the outfit a pop of more color)
- sewing machine (I have an old Husqvarna Viking sewing machine at home)
- mini yellow pom poms
- pattern for collar and leafy greens (FREE PRINTABLE)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Use this pattern to cut out a leafy collar to sew/glue on the onesie. You can add more green shades to add more dimension. I added a daisy embellishment to the collar.
2. Cut your desired length of elastic for your baby's head and sewing both ends. Cut out the leaves from this pattern and add the daisy embellishment. I used three leaves to form a cluster. Sew/Glue the leaf cluster on the elastic. To prevent scratching on the babies head, add a piece of square felt to cover the elastic.
3. Sew/glue on the mini yellow pom poms on the onesie to add as a the strawberry seeds. You can also add yellow pom poms to the tights as well.
5. And you have a strawbaby, I mean, strawberry baby costume!
OPTIONS:
*There are so many ways you can make this costume! You can create your own felt daisy, or individually sew on the seeds on the onesie. I just wanted to add pom poms so Juniper could see and feel different textures. Also, putting on tights is optional as well. I just thought about her being cold when we went trick or treating with her cousins.
